Shortcuts and Functions

When using digital applications to create art, shortcuts and knowledge of different functions are essential. If one does not know any functions, the application will not be usable and time will be wasted if one does not take the time to memorize key shortcuts.

In this post, I will talk about some functions and shortcuts I learned when using Blender to make a cottage.

The most important function of Blender, I think so far is the ability to change from object mode to edit mode. To switch, you simply press the tab button on the keyboard. When you enter edit mode, it supplies you with a variety of specific editing tools.

When in editing mode, you are able to modify your object of choice. This helps when operating thoroughly.

In edit mode, lots of other functions are available. For example, you can shrink or enlarge the object, face, line, or dot of choice. To do this, you press the 's' button.

You can also move the preferred object by pressing 'g'. For more monitored, controlled adjustment, you simply press 'y','x' or 'z' which respectively signify the direction(axis) the object will move.

When you press shift+'d', it allows you to copy and paste an object.

Also the object can be rotated if the 'r' key is pressed. To adjust with more accuracy, simply enter the amount(in degrees) you wish to rotate the object by consecutively.

A most recent function I learned about is the cut out function. It allows you to cut out a shape on a face by pressing 'k' and pressing enter afterwards(or 3 to select the face and delete it)

Another function I find interesting is the ability to go to 'wire mode'. Usually you remain in solid mode and see a white and black simulation of the model you are creating. However, when operating or adjusting lines or dots, it is considerably hard to see through solid surfaces and therefore goin into wire mode allows you to see through the solidness. Wire mode only shows lines and therefore it is easy to select specific lines and dots.

Modifiers add another level of completeness. There are lots of modifiers but the one that I used the most in my cottage was 'bevel'. Bevel adds a layer of softness and roundness to the otherwise sharp looking surface.

These are just a few of the many functions and shortcuts of Blender. I found it immensely entertaining when making the cottage. Although it was hard even with following the tutorial, I realized I was learning a lot and overall found it a helpful experience. I will continue to improve my skills and uncover the many functions of Blender and hopefully learn to use other applications as well.
